What’s in the deck

  • The big numbers: 206 bones, 80 axial and 126 appendicular, and how many sit in the skull, spine and each limb.
  • All 22 skull bones: the 8 cranial and 14 facial bones, each from where it sits, plus the hyoid and the 3 ear ossicles.
  • Spine and ribs: vertebrae per region, atlas and axis, the sternum’s 3 parts, and true, false and floating ribs.
  • Limbs, hands and feet: every carpal and tarsal by name, with the “So Long To Pinky” mnemonic and which bone owns each ankle bump.

Watch out: The maxilla is the upper jaw, not the nose or the cheekbone (that’s the zygomatic). And the metacarpals are the palm: the fingers are phalanges.

How to study it

  • One region at a time: skull first, then spine and ribs, then the limbs, adding a region only once the last one sticks. Check each name against a labeled diagram or model, since practicals show you the bone, not the word. Mnemonics: how to memorize the bones.
  • Plan the semester with how to study for anatomy and physiology, which covers lab practicals.
